It really is the middle of July already. Can you believe it? The temperature outside hasn’t been too bad here in Cedar City, but much hotter just 50 miles south. The darn wind keeps me inside more than the heat does.
I have been outside working on the Knucklehead Ranch. I’m still working on the garage project. The front of the building has been completed. Now, I am putting up the metal on the back of the building. There are piles of insulation that need cleaning up and storing. I am trying to get the garage into shape for winter and snow. I can’t wait to put my truck inside the garage this winter.
The goat head stickers are the devil. Those stickers grow every where. I used a shovel to dig them up and then let them dry to kill them. They are so prolific that I’m sure they’ll be back. The stickers get into the dog’s paws. Sometimes they end up in the house on the bottom of shoes. Ouch! Like stepping on a Lego.
My neighbor tilled the garden area for me, but I haven’t made time to plant anything. The growing season is only about 90 days here in this area. I needed to put up a wind break for the plants and I never got around to it. I find my list of projects to long sometimes.
I love rain. It is so refreshing. When I was little, my sister and I used to go out on the porch and sit with our umbrellas. We used to float a raft in the ditch when it rained really hard. Nutty kids. Oh, how much fun though.
I have been baking some delicious treats. Black bean brownies. They were surprisingly yummy and
very moist. The recipe was easy to follow. I baked them a little longer than directed. I have a gas oven so I keep an eye on everything while it bakes. Parchment paper makes a huge difference with baked goods. I purchased my last batch from Alison’s Pantry, but you can get it on Amazon in any shape or size.
Today I made some Lemon Bars http://pin.it/n2H1OYf. Last time I made them, the crust was over baked. Today, I baked the crust for 10 minutes before I put the lemon mixture on it. Well, the lemon mix went straight through the crust mixture because the crust wasn’t baked long enough. Nevertheless, the Lemon Bars turned out delicious. I don’t know how people do it on Pinterest. Everything looks like it came from a professional bakery. My baked goods often taste great but look pitiful. I finally bought a9 X 13″ Wilton cake pan. I love it. The pan came with a snap on lid. Convenient!
My hens are giving me 4 eggs a day. Bless their hearts. I just love the little birds. My chickens are pets, but not in the same sense as my doggies. The hens are very easy to care for. Water, grain, bugs, shelter, fresh air, and the sunshine. They hang out with the goats in the shade. It makes me happy when I go out in the morning to feed and every critter is making a noise of greeting.
I hope you will share my blog information with other friends. I’d love for them to subscribe to theknuckleheadranch.com.
