I have been looking for a set of plans for dog stairs that wouldn’t be difficult for me to build. This past week I constructed a set of stairs for my dogs to get on and off the bed. The project plans came from Pinterest of course. It was an easy and fun project to put together. It is in no way perfectly square, but it is serviceable and the dogs love it.
I’m a sucker for my dogs. I allow them to sleep with me. My puppy can’t get up on the bed by herself. My older bulldogs don’t like to jump up on the bed. The Bullies sit on the floor and bark when they need help getting up on the bed. I had cobbled together a few items to make a set of steps for them: a small step stool, and upside down Rubbermaid container, and a couch cushion. The puppy quickly learned to use these steps and the other dogs followed along. This set up was not very stable, so I was glad to finally find a plan for stairs.
The plans “DIY Dog Steps” were found on this website www.build-basic.com. I had a piece of decent plywood set aside. As my garage/shop is complete on the outside, for now, I can use the inside to build things. I am so thrilled to be able to create “stuff” in my workshop. I needed a circular saw, a miter saw (which I didn’t have), a small nail gun, 16g X 1″ nails, measuring tape, speed square, an L square, liquid nails and, palm sander. I also used the air compressor with my nail gun. I didn’t have the right type of wood pieces for the cleats and supports. My plywood was 1/2″ wide, so I used it. It took me about 2 hours to put the steps together. I did need to adjust the measurements a bit due to not having the right width wood pieces. I have a Numax straight finish nailer that worked great for this small project.
The instructions were easy to follow and there were pictures. And here you have it, our new set of stairs. The stairs still need to be painted and trimmed out. I sometimes amaze even myself when it comes to certain projects. I believe that anyone can do anything if they set their mind to it.
Have a good week.
